I joined Macquarie because it is a highly successful global organisation, and its graduate program is renowned. I was sure I would be working in a motivated and innovative team and would learn a great deal - which I have.

Every team at Macquarie has the knowledge and experience to get the job done in an efficient and innovative way. Everyone is given the freedom to create their own success and when success and excellence are achieved, they are celebrated.

My team is responsible for Macquarie's Intel Server Infrastructure, which consists of more than 1000 servers worldwide. A typical day includes reviewing the server fleet monitoring reports, and troubleshooting any problems. Working on the public key infrastructure project was particularly satisfying. It was a challenge to learn new technologies and concepts from scratch, and very rewarding to see the project fully implemented.

When asked what we like best about Macquarie, everyone says "the people". I try to think of something else, but end up saying "the people" too: lots of professional, talented, outcome-focussed people.

Our team supports an incredible range of businesses so I also enjoy the variety of work I do, and the independence I'm given to get things done. I'm responsible for end-to-end service delivery to the Banking & Property and Funds Management Groups. This involves understanding what the businesses are doing - and would like to be doing - and working out the infrastructure they need to help them get there.

I've been able to work in many different roles in my time at Macquarie, and each time I've had excellent training from both colleagues and external courses. I've also been able to travel: I've worked from our offices in New York, London and Hong Kong as well as some of our smaller overseas offices.

I've been with Macquarie for 17 years, and there's still something new and challenging every day. There are always fresh opportunities: I've had about 10 different roles since I joined.

Macquarie treats its people well. We are given the resources to do our jobs, learning and development opportunities in both technical skills and personal development, a supportive management culture and mentoring, the possibility of gaining offshore experience, and the freedom to control our own careers.

There is a great culture of success at Macquarie. The staff want Macquarie to be successful, and we all take pride in what we do. As Division Director of Business Delivery Teams in Infrastructure Technical Services (ITS), I have a team of 85 people, so I'm well placed to comment on the calibre of our staff, and I still say the people at Macquarie are its greatest assets.

Last year I was the technology representative in a team that conducted a due diligence on another business that Macquarie Securities subsequently formed a joint venture partnership with. It involved a lot of assessing and planning for the technology needed, all within a short period of time. I really enjoyed the challenges involved, and the opportunity to be part of a team that directly resulted in growing the business.

Since joining Macquarie, I have had training and coaching for my professional development as well as the opportunity to move to new roles within the Group when I was ready. Macquarie is a highly successful and professional organisation that relies heavily on technology, and provides a rewarding and challenging environment for IT professionals.

Macquarie is a big organisation, but it operates like a small one: decisions are made quickly, communication is effective, and people are valued.

Qualification(s): Bachelor of Engineering (Software)

I joined Macquarie a year ago as part of a team supporting the Macquarie Capital's document management system. We recently completed a system-wide upgrade to our servers and client applications, the biggest project to be implemented since the introduction of this system into the Group. For me, the most enjoyable aspect of the project was travelling to other Macquarie offices: I visited London, New York, Toronto, Perth and Auckland to help manage the rollout of the upgraded system.

There is a great sense of achievement and satisfaction when you are working on a large project that involves many people from the business as well as several key IT teams. The great thing about my role is that you never know what is around the corner. New and very different projects always come up as the business grows. Macquarie's dynamic nature ensures that you are always working with different people in ever-changing roles.
