Inaugural Phd Asthma Scholarship Winner Announced |
|
|
18 February 2002 An exciting research project to investigate whether the human body has a natural defence mechanism against asthma gained a promising young Adelaide doctor the inaugural Macquarie Bank Asthma Australia Research Alliance PhD Scholarship. Dr Dion Grosser, of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide, was awarded the Macquarie Bank Asthma Australia Research Alliance scholarship for his proposed research into whether the metal zinc in the lining cells of the nose and lung protects against asthma or whether it can be used to treat asthma. The award winning research proposal seeks to address whether adequate zinc levels are protective against asthma and whether adequate zinc levels in the lining cells may be important for the effectiveness of other asthma treatments. Dr Grosser's project was determined to be novel, important and innovative by the selection panel of Asthma Australia's Medical and Scientific Committee. He was one of three short-listed candidates from a field of 12 submissions all judged worthy of review. The Macquarie Bank Asthma Australia Research Alliance was established last year to support and promote Australian research into asthma - a disease affecting more than two million Australians and one which currently has no cure. The scholarship award aims to encourage promising young scientists to develop a career in the field of asthma research and to highlight the advances being made by Australia’s talented asthma researchers. Macquarie Bank Executive Chairman, David Clarke, congratulated Dr Grosser on his success and his commitment to asthma research, saying; “This PhD scholarship award proudly reflects Macquarie Bank’s commitment to innovation and excellence and its support for the career development of young professionals.” Dr Grosser will be presented with his award at a ceremony at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital tomorrow (at 1.30pm, Boardroom 9a, 9th Floor, 28 Woodville Road, Woodville South). Other initiatives of the Macquarie Bank Asthma Australia Research Alliance include: a successful research colloquium on early childhood asthma held earlier this month; developing a national asthma research magazine to disseminate research information to doctors and pharmacists; developing a national website to capture and communicate asthma research activities and initiating an asthma research fund to raise money for further asthma research.
