Melbourne Development Recognised for Environmental Excellence

20 November 2004

Melbourne's $400 million master planned community, Springthorpe, has been recognised for its master planning and environmentally sensitive design with two Excellence Awards from the Urban Development Institute (Victoria Division) of Australia.

At the Institute's 2004 annual awards ceremony in Melbourne yesterday, Urban Pacific Limited won the categories for Master Planned Community and Environmental Excellence for its Victorian flagship development, 'Springthorpe'.

"From the very beginning of this project we have been cognisant of the value of the local environment of Springthorpe," said Urban Pacific CEO Steven Papadopoulos. "It has been one of the main attractions of the development for new residents.

"Nationally, Urban Pacific strives for designs sensitive to the local community needs and environment."

Springthorpe is a 73-hectare, $400 million master-planned residential community in the Melbourne suburb of Macleod, 14 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD bordering the grounds of La Trobe University.

To date, more than 320 house and land packages have been sold, with the remaining 250 lots expected to be completed by late 2005. Springthorpe's facilities include a residents-only Country Club, significant areas of public open space and kilometres of walking and bicycle trails. It is located on a site with significant heritage value. Homes have been built in botanic style gardens and tracts of original bushland reserve, providing a contemporary built environment within a very established setting.

The project was created by the Urban Pacific development team with assistance of Cox Architects and planning consultants, Collie. Urban Pacific is the wholly owned residential development division of Macquarie Bank and currently has more than 8,000 lots under development nationally.

The UDIA awards are held annually in each state. Springthorpe won two state awards in 2003 - for 'Urban Design' and for 'Residential Development over 400 Lots'. It went on to win the 2004 National Award for Excellence in Residential Development.
