Airwave

Airwave is the primary provider of secure digital radio and communications to Great Britain’s police, fire and ambulance services and public safety organisations. Airwave uses a purpose-built network that covers 100% of the population and 99% of the land area.

MCG acquired a 50% interest in Airwave on 18 April 2007. At the same time, Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund II (MEIF II) acquired the other 50%.

Airwave owns and operates the world’s largest purpose built Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) public safety communications network. It provides secure, interoperable digital radio communications to police, fire and ambulance services (Blue light services) and other public safety customers in Great Britain.

Airwave’s network is based on more than 3,500 base stations. It is designed to continue functioning during major emergencies, when other communications networks may suffer from overloading or complete failure.

The majority of Airwave’s revenues are derived from the provision of network services under core contracts with the Blue light services. Airwave provides services to more than 200 public safety organisations, supporting potentially up to 220,000 end users under current contracts.

Use of the Airwave service is restricted to users who need to communicate with emergency services and who have been pre-approved by the UK Office of Communications (Ofcom).

Airwave has approximately £4bn revenue secured under long-term contracts with government related entities.
