Profile of the manager

Macquarie Infrastructure Group (MIG) is a Macquarie Group branded externally managed investment vehicle. MIG is a triple stapled structure. The entities comprised in MIG are Macquarie Infrastructure Trust (I), Macquarie Infrastructure Trust (II) and Macquarie Infrastructure Group International Limited (MIGIL), formerly known as Macquarie Infrastructure Bermuda Limited (MIBL).

The trusts comprised in MIG are managed by Macquarie Infrastructure Investment Management Limited (MIIML), a wholly owned subsidiary of Macquarie Group Limited. The sole purpose of MIIML is to manage the trusts comprised in MIG. Macquarie Capital Funds (Europe) Limited (MCFEL) is the adviser of MIGIL, the Bermudian company that forms the third element of MIG's triple stapled structure, and is also a wholly owned subsidiary of Macquarie Group Limited.

MIIML and MCFEL are part of Macquarie Capital. This group is a leading player in the privatisation of infrastructure worldwide.

MIG is managed within the Macquarie Capital Funds division of Macquarie Group. This division employs over 550 staff, many of whom are specialists in the development and ongoing management of infrastructure assets. John Hughes is the chief executive officer of MIG.

John Hughes joined Macquarie in 1997 and became an executive director in 2003. John is the CEO of MIG and has a strong multidisciplinary background in the infrastructure sector. Since joining Macquarie John has worked in a number of senior roles across a range of industry sectors. For the last three years John has been head of the Prudential Group, responsible for managing Macquarie Capital’s (formerly the Investment Banking Group) global principal equity investment portfolio. This involved detailed assessment of business and financial risks across a number of industry groups, and the selection, acquisition, management and divestment of Macquarie Capital’s principal positions in assets including roads, public transport, aged-care facilities, water utilities, wind farms, power utilities and car parking.

John worked with the successful bidder for Westlink M7 in Australia, and with the Macquarie teams that acquired an interest in the South Bay Expressway in San Diego. He has extensive project finance advisory experience including a number of significant toll road projects in Korea. John has also advised several state governments in Australia on asset divestment strategies, financial risk management and the privatisation of assets, including ports and gas utilities.

Prior to joining Macquarie, John was at Banker’s Trust Australia with advisory roles in the transport, resources and utility sectors.
