Macquarie Portfolio Management Limited today announced the launch of Macquarie Equinox Select Opportunities Trust ("Equinox Select Opportunities") - providing Australian retail investors with access to a select group of world-class absolute return hedge fund managers operating across the globe with a focus on Asia/emerging markets.
This latest offer - the ninth in the Australian retail series of the Equinox line - combines eight different component funds and trading programs deploying their unique capabilities across Asia/emerging markets and the more mature European and US markets.
Like previous Equinox offerings, Equinox Select Opportunities provides diversification across a variety of hedge fund strategies and aims to generate attractive risk-adjusted returns (over the medium to long term) in a variety of market conditions.
Macquarie Equity Markets Group, Division Director Cathy Kovacs said: "Investors are looking for increasingly sophisticated products and superior investment vehicles. While gains from the Australian market have been rewarding, many investors have started to look beyond investments in a single country and are increasingly looking overseas in light of favourable global economic trends."
Equinox Select Opportunities provides investors with the ability to access a geographically diversified range of fund managers and strategies. Additionally, it provides access to advanced investment strategies that are either difficult or not possible to access at an individual level."
"Equinox Select Opportunities allows investors to obtain exposure to different styles of investment across three categories; Specialist Funds which provide exposure to strategies focusing on Asia and emerging markets, Opportunistic Traders which provide exposure to strategies focusing on trends in global financial markets, and a Diversified Fund which provides investors with exposure to a broader range of hedge fund-style strategies in more developed markets".
While the minimum investment is $10,000, Macquarie Bank provides a gearing facility which allows investors to borrow 100 per cent of the amount needed to invest (with a minimum $50,000 loan), requiring no upfront outlay of capital. Interest rates start at 7.50%pa.
A feature of Equinox Select Opportunities is capital protection* at the capital protection date, that covers the full amount of the initial investment.
"Some investors want to avoid using their own capital but are interested in alternative sources of return. Capital protection and Macquarie's gearing facility allows the investor to borrow up to 100% of the investment capital", Ms Kovacs said.
The offshore investments accessed through these managers are hedged to Australian dollars to minimise exposure to foreign currency movements.
"By providing diversification through the selection of world-class international fund managers and trading programs, the Equinox series have demonstrated a track record of growth in a variety of market conditions," said Ms Kovacs.
Ms Kovacs said that interest in Equinox has been strong, with $170 million being invested over the last 12 months. In total, over $315 million has been invested by Australian retail investors in previous Equinox series.
Applications from Australian retail investors for Equinox Select Opportunities will be accepted until 23 June 2006 and a Product Disclosure Statement is available by phoning 1800 025 513.
