What is Visa Account Updater?

Visa Account Updater (VAU) is a service from Visa that Macquarie uses to help keep your credit card information up to date. It automatically updates your credit card details (e.g. credit card account number, expiry date) that you store with merchants whenever there are changes, so you don’t have to do it yourself.

Please note, this doesn’t apply to every merchant as VAU is only available for participating merchants.

How does VAU work?

When there are credit card information changes (like a new expiration date or new credit card number), Macquarie sends the updates to Visa.

When a merchant sends an inquiry to Visa for any updates to their stored credit card information, Visa will check and provide the latest details. Merchants will then be able to update the credit card information on their end and provide you with uninterrupted and continued service.

What does VAU mean for me?

Your credit card is automatically enrolled into VAU.

If you have recurring payment arrangements or direct debits set up, VAU means you don’t have to manually update card details with every merchant when a card expires or is replaced. This saves you time and reduces the risk of declines or missed payments.

Please note, this doesn’t apply to every merchant as VAU is only available for participating merchants.

Are there any privacy or security concerns with VAU?

VAU is designed to ensure the security of cardholder information. Only merchants that you have set up a recurring payment with, who are also participating in Visa’s VAU service, can access your updated card information. VAU follows all relevant data protection regulations to keep your information safe.

What if my card is replaced because of fraud?

If you notify us that you’ve experienced unrecognised transactions (i.e. fraud), we may opt you out of VAU to ensure your new card details are not exposed to further fraudulent activity.

This means you’d need to re-establish your recurring payment arrangements and direct debits with merchants each time your card expires or is replaced.

Please note, once your card is opted out of VAU, you won’t be able to opt back in.
